Igniting Your Personal and Professional Growth

Describe one or two, specific learning experiences from your fellowship. In words, show us this experience and explain why it was powerful.

My visit to Trinity College and The Book Of Kells Experience was an unforgettable learning experience that offered a deep dive into history, art, and literature. I was greeted by the majestic architecture and the vibrant atmosphere. I gained insights into the religious and cultural significance of the manuscript itself, with understanding of how it reflects the religious devotion and artistic achievements of its time. It left me in awe and so inspired to share the stories with my students.

What did you learn about yourself? What did you learn professionally?

Traveling through Ireland illuminated aspects of my identity, revealing my deep connection to history, culture, and creativity. It affirmed my curiosity about the world, my resilience in the face of challenges, and my value for human connections. This learning experience has enriched my understanding of myself and has inspired me to embrace new experiences with a more profound sense of purpose and curiosity. My passion for storytelling and creative expression were ignited.

What were some unplanned or unexpected experiences or outcomes of your fellowship? Or, how did the fellowship you crafted differ from the actual learning experience?

An unplanned day trip to Cong became a highlight and captivated us immediately. The village, famous for its role in the film The Quiet Man, was a picturesque setting that seamlessly blended history with cinematic allure. Walking through Cong's ancient abbey ruins and the tranquil grounds of the Cong Woods, I was struck by the deep sense of history and the enduring connection between the landscape and its past. This offered a firsthand experience to immerse and explore with locals.

Impacting Your Classroom, School and Community

Outline specific plans you have to implement your fellowship and reach your student goals.

My learning experience in Ireland will directly enhance student goals by infusing lessons with rich historical and cultural insights, making learning more engaging and contextually relevant. By incorporating the storytelling techniques and creative approaches I encountered, students will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of literature, history, and cultural diversity, fostering their critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills.

What is one way you can leverage your fellowship to create one authentic learning experience for students? (e.g. hands-on learning, projects, community engagement)

I can leverage my fellowship by organizing a hands-on project where students create multimedia presentations on both Irish culture and history as well as their own, incorporating storytelling techniques and historical insights from my experiences. This project will engage students in research, creativity, and presentation skills while connecting them to real-world contexts, making their learning experience more dynamic and authentic.

How, specifically, will your fellowship extend beyond your classroom? (e.g. families, school-at-large, afterschool groups, surrounding community, colleagues, etc.)

We plan to host a storytelling community night where each student can share their unique stories and projects with peers, parents, and teachers. This event will provide a platform for students to present their hard work, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community. It will include a mix of individual and group storytelling, complemented by interactive activities to create a supportive and engaging atmosphere. We aim to build confidence and encourage a love for storytelling in celebration.
